The coat of arms of
the Spinola family, with the motto Melius mori quam foedari,
on the door of entry, introduces one to the roundabout tour
through the hall and the halls which were redecorated in
1734 when the residence was inherited by Maddalena Doria,
wife of Nicolò Spinola of San Luca who for the first
time gave the name to the mansion which it still conserves.
With the consultation and supervision of Lorenzo de Ferrari,
between 1734 and 1736, the decorative arrangement and the
criteria for exhibition of the works of art was totally
changed. Thanks to the meticulous account book in which
the expenses in these two years were recorded as well as
the artists, but most of all the artisans involved, and
thanks to the eighteenth century descriptions of the halls,
the actual presentation, such as furnishings and paintings,
was able to be determined in as closely similar a manner
possible to the moment of Maddalena Doria whose choices
are therefore proposed again in the tour of the rooms of
this storey.
